Greenock 235 for 6 after 50 overs ( 25 points ) Hillhead 39 all out ( after 13 overs ) 0 points
It would be a kindness not to dwell over long on the details of this match which ended in an 196 run defeat at the sun baked Glenpark on the final Saturday of the 2022 season.
Greenock’s innings was built around a 4th wicket partnership of 128 between Ryan Walker and all rounder, Gregor Chambers. The former batted beautifully to finish up with 121 while the latter fell for 41, one of Keshav Soni’s 3 wickets. Stand in wicket keeper , Jack Holland, took 2 catches and did not concede a bye, while Ross Jones was his usual tigerish self, both in the field and with the new ball.
Only captain Shehroz Mehmood was able to make any response with the bat, his 22 including somewhat bizarrely the only 6 of the game. Of Gregor Chambers 8 wicket haul, 7 were clean bowled, a tangible reward for accurate medium/medium fast straight bowling and a testimony to poorish technique in the Hillhead ranks.
This second consecutive defeat with zero bonus points places Hillhead in the relegation zone of the WDCU Division1 for season 2022. It is unlikely that the talked about league restructuring will throw Hillhead 1st X1 a lifeline.
