Kilmarnock 1st XI 236 for 4 in 50 overs (25 pts) Hillhead 1st XI 173 all out in 46 overs (3 pts)

It was tough going for Hillhead in the Hughenden Heat of a Saturday afternoon on a glorious day which found the home XI suffering from some kind of collective amnesia in respect of catching a cricket ball. The count of regulation catches spilled depended on whether the question was put to the home players or  spectators,  but the latter could be relied upon for objectivity; conservatively it was 8 drops.

The Kilmarnock opening batters, Adrian Maritz and Ben Rigby, took full advantage with an opening stand of 170 in 38 overs to which the former contributed 105, the latter 58 before retiring hurt. Hillhead captain, wicket keeper, Jim Lindley-Dawe cut a frustrated figure as he used 8 bowlers of whom Mazumder returned 2-28 off 7 overs and Jared Bartlett 0-45 off his full allocation of 10 overs of leg spin. Jared had more reason than most to be “upset” with his colleagues’ fielding.

In reply, Hillhead stumbled their way to 173, with all-rounder “ Shash” Mazumber opening and batting for 41 overs for his 58.  Next highest scorer was extras which contributed 42 to the total. Five of the home batters were clean bowled. Newbie, Henry “The author” James, enjoyed an encouraging debut with a resolute 27 including 2 maximums to add to his bowling in the first innings.

It was certainly early season fare at the stadium. Hopefully matters will look up, starting with the next league game, away at East Renfrewshire (Woodfarm) on Saturday May 18th, Start 12.00
