Hillhead X1 melt in the Renfrew sun

Hillhead 157 all out( after 45 overs ) 3 pts Renfrew 159 for 5 ( after 33 overs ) 25 pts

It was a wonderful afternoon for playing Cricket, but not so hot if you were a Hillhead 1st X1 player or supporter. Taking first knock, most of the Hillhead batters made a start, but only Ross Jones and Paul Bartlett occupied the crease with any authority. The former complied a fine 51, his first 4 scoring shots were 4,6, 4 and 4, with the maximum almost decapacitating the venerable Hillhead scorer. Bartlett senior was his usual strong self with maximum efficiency in the scoring “V” and his 20 was a valuable addition to the Hillhead total. The visiting tail should have been capable of posting a more challenging total, but succumbed to some suicidal running between the wickets. However, Renfrew did their best to be generous hosts and make a contest of it by their profligacy in bowling wides, some 29 being added to the visiting total.

For a while at the start of the Renfrew reply, Hillhead looked capable of making a game of it when Mark Forbes was unleashing thunderbolts at the home openers. But his support bowlers, apart from his captain, Shehroz Mehmood, who contributed his usual miserly spell of 10 overs for 27 with 2 wickets, withered in the afternoon heat and effectively melted. Hillhead did well to hold the chances which came their way with both Mehmood and Jacques Grosvenor pouching in the deep.

Liberal application of after sun and a mild reproach from Coach, Mike Ashworth, were the principal after match activities. Round 12 of the competition sees Hillhead return to Hughenden for their next tussle in the WDCU Divison1 against East Kilbride on Saturday July 16th with a 12.00 start.
