Thomson McCallum Irvine 187 a/o in 48.5 overs 25 pts Hillhead 150 a/o in 42.5 overs 5 pts

This was a disappointing home defeat for Hillhead 1st X1. Irvine owed their total to a fine 3rd wicket partnership of 71 from Rogers and Avontuur who took the total to 93 before being separated . Their last five wickets added some 72 runs, taking their total from 115 to 187. Once again Hillhead’s extras were overgenerous with a contribution of 32. Captain Shehroz Mehmood again bowled well with a miserly spell of 10 overs for22 with 1 wicket. Jack Holland and Ayub Khan were used sparingly, their combined spells of 12 overs yielding only 24 runs.

A total of 188 was easily reachable by Hillhead given the benign nature of the wicket. But only Holland with his 55 not out and to a lesser extent Paul Bartlett ( 19 ) and Ross Jones ( 17) revealed any fluency. Unlike Irvine’s tail who all “ hung around “ to good effect, Hillhead’s last five batsmen contributed only 7 runs between them.

Jack Holland certainly deserved a MOM award – if there had been one – with his all round skill set, including two fine catches taken over his head running backwards.

Hillhead will certainly wish to show more nous and application if they hope to stay in this league. Their next game is away at Larbert against table toppers, Stenhousemuir on Saturday June 11th.
