HILLHEAD FALL IN ROUND 13 AT WHITEHAUGH.

Hillhead 1st XI 96 all out in 35 overs, Kelburne 1st XI 100 for 1 in 24 overs. (25 points)

This was another difficult day for Hillhead, the visitors to Whitehaugh, the home ground of Kelburne CC. Winning the toss and batting first was a brave option, but after 8 overs of their innings, Hillhead were 21 for 4 and the gamble had failed, However facing Steyn, the hosts opening bowler was no easy gig with the ball being propelled at what seemed “ warp speed” with David Graham, the home wicket keeper, standing back some 24 metres. Juan Steyn’s analysis after 5 overs was 5-4-5-2, the only runs conceded being wides. Fortunately his opening partner, Ross Maclean, was somewhat more profligate and, after his opening spell of 5 overs, his figures were 5-1-21-2.

The rest of the Hillhead innings proceeded much more sedately with 4 change bowlers, all spinners, operating. For the purists, 2 were orthodox slow left arm and the other pair both right arm off break. For these 27 overs, the visitors added 70 runs for the loss of 6 wickets.  Disappointingly, 4 of these batsmen were moving well through the gears in their teens, but each then fell to a rash shot instead of building gradually.

Batting/battling for 50 overs is currently a “ hill” too far.

Despite a herculean effort of 10 overs of fast bowling from Hillheads opener, Gavin Lynch, Kelburne’s batters in response were not unduly troubled. Agrim Jain took the only wicket to fall thanks to a smart catch by Rayyan Butt at cover point. With a low total to defend Hillhead’s support bowlers struggled for any containment, their 9 overs conceding some 46 runs. It was left to opener, James Cook, on 62 n.o. and no.3 Zain Mohammed on 25 n.o to secure maximum points for their side.
