GHK 1ST X1 150 all out ( in 47 overs ) 25 points Hillhead 1st X1 106 ( all out in 37.4 overs ) 3 points
This was the first game of the 2nd round in the WDCU Division 1 and was one which the home team desperately wanted to win. However, after winning the toss and inserting their visitors, GHK, to bat, Hillhead’s bowling restricted them to just 150, but their batting let them down badly, and , on a blameless wicket, managed only 106 in reply.
Yet Hillhead could not have asked for a better start with returning seamer, Jacques Grosvenor, taking 3- 14 from his first five overs. But GHK fought back well with 2 middle order partnerships of 60 and then 50, involving Nadeem, Izaz and Hussein which took them to 144 for 5 in the in the 42nd over. Thankfully Hillhead seized back the initiative . Ross Jones pitched in with 2 for 5, bowling his occasional cutters while Jack Holland’s perseverance paid off with 3 for 19 from his off spin.
150 was an achievable target, but it required all Hillhead’s batters to make a contribution to the chase. Unfortunately only 3 made it into double figures. Hasan Azhar scratched around for his 16, while Ross Jones tried to move the score along with a quick 30. Captain Shehroz Mehmood refound some of his batting belligerence to score a rapid 24 not out, but ultimately ran out of colleagues.
Hillhead managed just 3 points from this game, when in reality their target would have been 25 with the win. Next Saturday, July 9th, they travel the short distance to Dean Park Renfrew to play the home side in a game they would want to win.
