DUMFRIES 1XI 325 for 6 in 50 overs (25 points) HILLHEAD 1XI 148 all out in 38 overs (0 points)

At the end of the 34th over of Dumfries’s innings, their score was 170 for 5 wickets. The predictive score in the CSEU software after 50 overs was 251. Obviously the “algorithm” was never designed for a batter with the quality of Jonathan Van Zyl. who at that stage was 56 not out. In the next 15 overs in the company of Alan Davidson, the pair added some 150 runs. Eventually Van Zyl holed out for 145, having displayed a full play book of orthodox strokes all round the wicket, interspersed with ramp shots. There was no space against his name left in the traditional scorebook!! His late cutting/open faced batting to the third man boundary was delightful to any observer, not so for the visitors bowlers who toiled manfully in the face of huge adversity. Davidson finished on 46 not out. Hillhead’s catching, when the ball came their way, was good with both Lindley-Dawe and Ganesh Adarkar holding on well. Gavin “Logger” Lynch pouched two sharp chances at slip. Cammy Horn, despite rolling his ankle, returned the best bowling figures of 10-1-71-3, while Snehaan Das’ first 5 overs cost only 17.

The Hillhead response certainly started brightly with a combative opening knock of 30 from captain, Jim Lindley Dawe. Fifty runs were added for the 1st wicket with Hugo Longrigg, who then anchored the middle order with an obdurate 34 . Unfortunately the Dumfries spin attack of Reynold Lewis and Van Zyl (again !!) accounted for 7 of the Hillhead batters for only 48 runs in 13 overs.

Jacques Grosvenor, on his return to the Hillhead 1st XI, showed some promise with his defiant 12 not out. However the day belonged to the outstanding batting talent of Jonathan Van Zyl, who has already enjoyed representative experience with South Africa U19s.

Hillhead now face local rivals, Glasgow Accies, on Saturday June 29th. 12.00 start, in a game where a win would be very welcome to arrest their recent poor form.
